Counselling

One of the biggest misconceptions about counselling is that the only people that need it are insane or violent, and a lot of the time this is simply not the case. Many people that use counselling may be going through a rough patch in their life, and may only have a problem in the short term, not that they are crazy. The truly insane may not benefit from counselling at all, as their treatment often involves far more intense and frequent methods.

This should not trivialise what counselling can do, however. There are arguably as many types of counselling nowadays as there are potential problems, which is fantastic as it means that exactly the right type of counselling can be found for almost any problem. You may want to bear in mind that quality of service will vary, so if you are thinking about trying counselling it is best to look around for exactly what you want as well as the best deal.

Counselling can be useful for smaller problems as well as bigger ones, so if you are feeling particularly low or you feel as if you cannot talk to anyone about your feelings and thoughts, then it can be good in this way as well. This is one of the reasons why school and university counsellors can be particularly useful and needed, because a lot of the issues experienced by students and children are not overly serious, but still need to be addressed, so it is important for them to have access to such a service.
